The magic of hibiscus flowers
I’ve been dyeing quite a lot recently. Eucalyptus leaves, dandelions from Italy, rooibos tea, avocado stones, but the hibiscus flowers are one of my favourite.
My intention was to make grey ribbons for a woven piece I have in mind. I follow few people on IG and the result from the hibiscus is a beautiful shade of purple/grey.
As soon as I started extracting the dye I was so surprised to discover that the colour emerging was an incredible raspberry! So intense!
I posted the picture of my stained wooden spoon on my Instagram account and one of the followers, a natural dye pro, told me that once I rinsed the fabric in water the colour would turn from raspberry to grey. How exciting!
The ribbons turned out to be a beautiful pink, after one week I washed half of them in cold water and like magic they turned grey! Incredible! I felt like a witch watching the transformation!
I then ironed the ribbons and used my wooden pegs to store them.
I absolutely love the two shades and they work so well together. I’m looking forward to use them soon.
